The Patek Philippe watch below was sold for “only” half a million dollars, so it’s a little bit short of our usual selection criteria, but nevertheless, this is one of the most expensive Patek Philippe I’ve ever seen and in its category, this sale event certainly worth mentioning.

Patek Philippe Watch No.1908044 Ref.5013P

It is a platinum automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch with retrograde date and phases of the moon. The Patek Philippe No.1908044 Ref.5013P was launched in 1992 and is one of the most complex wristwatches ever made by Patek Philippe with a total of 515 parts.

The watch was sold for 241,250 GBP ($475,817)

Other recent, interesting, high-end sales in their respective category at Sotheby’s auction include:

Emerald and diamond braclet by Tiffany & Co was sold for 145,250 GBP (~$287,000)

Emerald Diamond Bracelet by Tiffany & Co.

1990 Chateau Petrus red Bordeaux wine from Pomerol, France was sold for 23,000 GBP (~$45,000)

With the Big Bang’s new found popularity amongst the horologically savvy Hublot has unveiled its “One Million Dollar Big Bang” at this year’s Baselword. The One Million Dollar Big Bang watch is completely covered, case, dial and buckle, with more than 493 Top Wesselton “baguette” diamonds. It is the first ever watch or let me be precise, flying tourbillion, realized in “serti mysterieux” or “mysterious setting.” Serti mysterieux is a technique pioneered by Van Cleef & Arpels to hide the stone settings under the stone. Thus you can only see the diamonds or the stones, not the structure which is holding them.

Hublot has spent more than 2,000 hours making the One Million Dollar Big Bang; from design through to research and development, machine programming, choice of (micro-) precision tools, the cutting of the diamonds, the visual examination of each part, setting, casing and fine-tuning.

This just leaves one question, “Is the One Million Dollar Big Bang considered a Timepiece or Jewelry?”
