Diamonds are known to be ‘a girl’s best friend’ as well as the go-to wedding and engagement gem. And while we hear about diamonds in songs and see them in everything from ads to movies, many people lack a common knowledge of these super popular jewels. Surprisingly, clear, or colorless diamonds, are not more precious than their vibrant counterparts. Colored diamonds are costlier, because of their rarity, and are graded on a scale from ‘Fancy Light’, ‘Fancy’, ‘Fancy Intense’, and ‘Fancy Vivid’ — the latter being the priciest. Here is a list of some of the most expensive fancy color diamonds and their record breaking sales.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says the red fancy color diamond is the rarest of them all— although they are not the most expensive. The Hancock Red is amongst the most famous, as shown on GIA.edu. The website remarks, “At the time of its sale in 1987 it was the most expensive per-carat gemstone ever sold at auction. The hammer came down at $880,000…”. What causes the diamond’s red color is unknown, but a fancy color diamond’s cut affects its hue: GIA reports say, “The radiant cutting style helps intensify a fancy colored diamond’s color.”
