Our next most sought-after fancy diamond color is blue. Though not as rare as red, blue is indeed more expensive. One of the world’s most famous fancy blue diamonds is the Wittlesbach-Graff, sold in 2008. The New York Time’s website reports that the piece was, “fought over by rival diamond dealers and hammered down in a matter of minutes for the extraordinary price of $24.3 million — (at the time) the most ever paid for a diamond at auction,”. The GIA believes that boron may be accountable for the intensity of color in a fancy blue diamond, and the purity of color is a factor that affects a gem’s price.
